What is Robotic Surgery?
Da Vinci robot surgery has been touted as a high-tech surgical option that provides patients and surgeons with increased surgical precision and reduced recovery time. A surgeon controls the da Vinci Surgical System’s multiple robotic arms from behind a magnified, high-resolution image of the patient’s surgical site.
Da Vinci robots were used in about 400,000 surgeries in the U.S. in 2012, most commonly for hysterectomies and prostate removal. In only a few years, five deaths and hundreds of adverse events associated with da Vinci robots have been reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

When asked why the company is not recalling the potentially defective scissors, Intuitive said they “considered the risk to patients of removing the product from the field … [and] determined that the risks of device removal before a replacement could be offered outweighed the risks of leaving the existing product in the field.”
