History

The neighborhood was developed in 1905 by Frank Mauran as a suburban residential locality. It began with 50 homes and included stringent restrictions on the land that stood at an elevation of 300 feet above Market Street. A quick train ride would get you from the neighborhood to the city. Originally real estate began at $8,000 and went up to $15,000.

The community is home to two cemeteries, the Ivy Hill and the Chelten Hills Cemeteries. The Ivy Hill Cemetery and Crematory, located on Easton Road, has served the community for over 125 years. It is regarded as one of the greater area’s finest. The Chelten Hills Cemetery was originally known as the Philadelphia Crematorium. It was one of the state’s first, and it opened in 1888. After it purchased the 30 surrounding acres, the crematorium was renamed the Chelten Hills Cemetery.

The Woodcrest United Church of Christ was established in 1940 by The Reformed Church of the United States. As the community began to grow, the church addressed its need for a school for the community by helping found the Edmonds Public School. Other places of worship within the area include:
