Background
Bethayres is an unincorporated community a part of Lower Moreland Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The community is also considered a part of Huntington Valley because the Huntington Valley post office is located within Bethayres.
The SEPTA West Trenton Regional Rail line also runs through Bethayres at their station and provides residents with transportation to and from Philadelphia and other nearby areas.
Going Back In Time
The community dates back to the 1870s, when it received its name as the railroad added the land to its route. The name originated from a local woman by the name of Elizabeth Ayres, whose son happened to work at the Reading Railroad. Her son named the station after his mother, and the Bethayres neighborhood developed around it, especially near the crossroads of Welsh Rd and Huntingdon Pike.
Until they merged, Bethayres and its neighboring region, Huntingdon Valley, had individual post offices. Huntingdon Valley-Bethayres was the lengthiest postal name in the United States before it was altered to what it is now, Huntingdon Valley Post Office.
Interesting Historical Facts
On January 3, 1989, the village gained news when Bucks County resident Glen Alton Barhight hijacked a SEPTA bus, setting off a chain of events that culminated in 15 individuals sustaining injuries, 15 automobiles being damaged or destroyed, and a police chase through five towns resulting in the bus colliding with a tree in Bethayres.
