Located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Jenkintown is a borough north of Center City Philly. The borough was named after a Welsh pioneer settler, Stephen Jenkins. Just outside Philly, Jenkintown settled around 1697 right between Abington and Cheltenham Townships and became incorporated in 1874.

Primarily a residential community, the borough separates its East and West residential neighborhoods by the Business District that runs along Old York Road, also known as Route 611. The majority of the residential area is located on the borough’s West side, with tons of traditional single-family homes, duplexes, apartment complexes, and row homes.

The borough contains two fire departments that were founded over 125 years ago, called the Pioneer Fire Company #1 and the Independent Fire Company #2. The Pioneer Company was founded in 1884, and the Independent Company was founded in 1889 as a part of the borough’s historical division between Catholics and Protestants.

Education

The Jenkintown Elementary School and Jenkintown High School are conveniently located in the middle of the residential area, ideal for easy commute. The Jenkintown School District also includes St. Josephs, the Protector Regional Catholic School, as well as an independent Quaker school called Abington Friends School, which serves children from 3-12 years of age and has been a part of the neighborhood since 1697.

Demographics

Based on the census from 2010, Jenkintown has a racial mixture of about 87% White, 5% Black or African American, 3% Hispanic or Latino, 2% Asian, and the remaining races hold 1.8% of the population. The census from 2000 states there are an estimated 4,000 people, 2,000 households, and 1,000 families that all reside in the borough, which the numbers increasing.
