58-Year-Old Man Falls Into Philadelphia Sinkhole
A Philadelphia man suffered minor injuries to his ankle, wrist, and lower back after falling into an 8-foot sinkhole in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city on Saturday, August 11th. Firefighters responded and rescued the man from the hole.
58-year-old Eugene Clarke said that the sinkhole had been there for about a week and that it been had reported to the Philadelphia Water Department. The Department had set up caution tape and orange cones around the hole, but they had been knocked down by a car. Clarke was worried about children playing in the area potentially falling into the hole, and was attempting to set the cones back up when he fell inside.
The Department responded by setting up more cones and yellow tape, but the hole has still not been repaired. While being interviewed by NBC 10, Clarke wondered why a steel plate had not been placed over the hole. This plate could have prevented accidents and injuries before the repair job was completed.
