The small, quaint unincorporated community of Rydal is located in Abington Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and is known for its mostly residential community with a single shopping center.

Education

Rydal is known for its educational opportunities at the Abington campus of Pennsylvania State University that sits on 45 acres of wooded land. The Penn State Abington campus was first built as a private girls’ school in the early twentieth century. It was established in 1850, at a time when girls’ education was becoming more common, and new institutions were springing up.

Demand for this all-girls private school has decreased as social norms have changed. The owner, Sutherland, donated the school, including all the Abington buildings, to Pennsylvania State University in 1950. Along with the buildings came a painting by Thomas Moran who was an American artist who owned money to Jay Cooke, another owner of the establishment.

Penn State Abington-Ogontz was renamed in 1995 to reflect the university’s links to the local population but was later renamed once more to Penn State Abington in 1997 when it officially became designated as a Penn State College.
