Kennedy House

The neighborhood of Kennedy House is located in Glenside, a census-designated place. Glenside is situated in Cheltenham Township in Montgomery County in Pennsylvania. The town of Stenton is to the south, and Edge Hill is to its north. Wyncote is its eastern neighbor, and Laverock is to the west. Jenkintown is just 2.4 miles away via Church Road and Washington Lane.

History

The area is located in the Cheltenham Township that was founded in 1682 by a group of fifteen Quakers originally from Cheltenham, England. This group purchased land from William Penn in the amount of 4,070 acres. In 1784, the township became the smallest in Montgomery County. The following owned the largest amount of land in the township:

  • William Brown – 500 acres – September 10, 1683
  • William Frampton – 500 acres – January 13, 1683
  • Tobias Leech – 350 acres – September 10, 1683
  • Richard Wall Sr. – 300 acres – September 10, 1683
  • John Russell – 300 acres – November 5, 1683
  • Mary Jefferson – 300 acres – January 13, 1683
  • Thomas Phillips – 300 acres – June 13, 1683

During the early 20th century, the area was one of the most affluent communities in the area. Jay Cooke, a railroad tycoon, was one of the first to build his estate and mansion in the area. His 200-acre estate was later converted into a school before being demolished. Many other prominent figures whose estates were built in the area included:

  • Henry Breyer, Jr
  • Abraham Barker
  • the Widener family

Education

Approximately 17.9% of the area’s population attend Arcadia University, which is located on Easton Road. The university was founded in 1853 and granted university status in 2001. Originally the college was located in Jenkintown, but due to expansion and the need for more room for the students, it moved to the area in 1928. The building became known as the Grey Towers property. This top-ranked private college offers many degrees to the 3,700 resident students that are enrolled. In addition to the face-to-face students, there are 3,000 study abroad students. Some of the degree programs offered include:

Demographics

Glenside’s population was 8,384 according to the census 2010. This includes Kennedy House and other neighborhoods that make up the CDP. From the 2000 count of 7,914, this was a 5.9% increase that consisted of 3,103 households and 2,013 families. The racial makeup of the whole area was the following:

  • 85.4% white
  • 7.2% African American
  • 2.9% Hispanic or Latino
  • 2.8% Asian
  • 0.2% Native American
  • 0.0%Pacific Islander
  • 1.0% other races
  • 1.7% two or more races

As many as 11.9% of the residents were born outside of the United States. Chinese and Spanish are spoken in addition to the 83.3% that speak English as their primary language.

  • 36.1% Italian
  • 3.0% Puerto Rican

According to the 2000 census, the average household income was $58,868. The following is the occupational breakdown of the area:

  • 55.1% executive, management, and professional positions
  • 22.6% sales and service occupations
  • 12.2% manufacturing and laborer jobs
  • 10.2% clerical, assistant, and tech support roles
